February, March & April 2010
Masterpieces from Paris is an extraordinary collection of some of the best known works of 19th century post-impressionism from the Musee d’Orsay in Paris.
At the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra until April, the exhibition features masterpieces by Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cezanne, Georges Seurat, Pierre Bonnard, Claude Monet, Maurice Denis and Edouard Vuillard.
The 114 works comprise the most significant exhibition to come to the NGA.
“Never before have so many famous masterpieces been brought together for one exhibition in this country,” said NGA’s director Ron Radford.
“These works almost never leave the Musee d’Orsay even singly and never before in these numbers.”
The exhibition coincides with the renovation of the museum’s Post-Impressionist Galleries.
Canberra is the first city to host Masterpieces from Paris followed by Tokyo and San Francisco.
Among the featured works will be Van Gough’s “Bedroom at Arles” 1889, Gauguin’s “Tahitian Woman” 1891, Cezanne’s beloved “Mount Saint-Victorie” 1890 and many other great examples by post-impressionist painters.
GET Educational Tours exclusive study tour of the exhibition includes an opportunity to explore the collections in the National Portrait Gallery and the Australian War Memorial.
